Description:
Small attractive bird, exhibits marked plumage dichromatism. Male has black head and crest, with white or rufous upperparts and long tail-streamers. Intermediate birds, showing rufous and white in plumage, occur. Female and immature are similar to rufous male, but have shorter crest and short square-ended tail.
Distribution:
Uncommon summer visitor to south-western border areas of Diamer and Ghizer districts. Inhabits deciduous mountain forest, shady and well-watered groves, light forest, plantations; in winter also gardens and shrubland, between 1200-1800m.
Behavior:
Mostly alone or in pairs in understorey, with most foraging occurring close to ground. Occasionally descends close to forest floor, where flutters in order to dislodge insects from the low vegetation. Chiefly feeds on small winged insects. Capable of seizing very large prey, battered to death, and only thorax and abdomen swallowed.
